In April 2016 Michael Voris's homosexual past finally caught up with him. The crusading on-camera face of Church Militant TV who had been the scourge of homosexuals in the Catholic Church turned out to be a homosexual himself and tried to bring closure to the scandal by outing himself. But even if damage control brought about a quick fix, many questions remained unanswered. The Man Behind the Curtain addresses all of those questions.
The Man Behind the Curtain Michael Voris and the Homosexual Vortex edition by E Michael Jones Religion Spirituality eBooks
I purchased this book out of curiosity. I have had my own questions at times about Michael Voris and his team because his style of delivery has struck me as a dream-come-true for those who perceive the Church as their enemy. There is too often a repellent appearance of smugness in Mr. Voris’ presentations and a routine failure to modulate his message in ways that might make the “hard sayings” of the gospels and Church teaching understandable to those who do not already understand them. Every video seems to contain at least one sound byte that can be used to make faithful Catholics sound like hard hearted monsters. Given the superb examples of powerful witness that have come from members of the Courage apostolate (regarding same-sex attraction and the virtue of chastity as it pertains to all Christians). I can not imagine why Voris has chosen to proceed as he does, given his own personal history. I have wondered, in short, if he was a fake who desires to sow misunderstanding and resentment inside and outside of the Church; hence my curiosity and the purchase of Jones’ book.If any good has come from my reading this foolish, uncharitable, fundamentally unCatholic work it is this: I now feel even deeper empathy for those in and outside of the Church who feel an antipathy towards Catholics based on their exposure to the likes of Mr. Jones. His book presents a mix of tattle-tales, serious slander, tacit self-congratulation, and “proofs” of Mr. Jones’ fatuous theories about the “narcissism” and “spiritual immaturity” of various persons discussed in his book. He is merciless toward Voris and to Voris’ family and friends. Furthermore, Jones’ primary complaint about Voris seems to boil down to: Michael Voris has acknowledged experiencing sexual attraction toward other men and having acted on these attractions in the past. Never mind that he has (apparently) embraced the Church’s teachings on sexual ethics and devoted himself to a life of chastity and evangelization, says Mr. Jones, for we must all freak out really hard about “the homosexual” in our midst! And then we should all get on board with “understanding” how “narcissistic” and spiritually immature Mother Angelica was!
Etc., etc.
I wish I had more time but no such luck. I recommend that you do NOT purchase this book. I felt completely slimed by it.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking in with the writings and videoed witness given by members of Courage, International and by other Catholics who can be found through Jason Evert’s website. Whether people are attracted to members of the opposite sex or to members of the same sex the Christian person is called to a life of chastity. This is not the easiest road to take, but it is ultimately the most peaceful and best road to take. The very word, “chaste”, used to make me recoil in disgust. But the Church teaches chastity because it really does bring great peace and profound happiness.

The Man Behind the Curtain Michael Voris and the Homosexual Vortex edition by E Michael Jones Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I am no Voris fan, but I feel like I did harm to myself reading this book. Every last bit of the information presented in 'The Man Behind the Curtain' could be true, and I would still think E. Michael Jones was wrong to publish it. (Same goes for his collaborators, if he had any.) It may also be true that Michael Voris is the last person on earth who should ever run a Roman Catholic media apostolate, but, nevertheless, I felt nothing but sympathy for him after reading it. If the source of all the vile, salacious details included here was actually Voris' heretofore "Spiritual Advisor", then God help us all.
I should have liked this book. I deeply respect and admire E. Michael Jones, and I was one of the minority of people who was not blindly supportive of Michael Voris after his public revelation of his homosexual past, and whose comments were deleted from the combox of that particular Vortex. Considering the nature of his sinful former life, I considered it connivingly deceptive of him to have concealed it on the basis of "the details not mattering" and I questioned his ability to retain his public role, since I maintain that his homosexuality fatally wounds his ability to relate to the majority of Catholics and act as a leader in an orthodox movement of restoration. That being said, I was disgusted and repelled by this vile book.
Jones' main argument reflects my own feelings, regarding Voris' too-cute-by-half deception about his past and the deep psychological flaws inherent in homosexuals which set them apart from heterosexuals and hobble their ability to function normally in life. Jones believes that Voris should have retired from his public role in Church Militant and gone off to do penance for a number of years. Ok, that's an argument that can be debated. But to buttress his argument, Jones utilized the most salacious and humiliating personal information directly from Voris' personal spiritual director (assumed to be Fr. Paul Nicholson) which served no purpose other than the personal destruction of Voris. Presumably any information that a man tells his personal spiritual director would be protected by the seal of the Confessional, so we are dealing with a major ecclesiastical scandal here. I don't know how the process works precisely, but whoever is the bishop in authority over this priest needs to get to the bottom of this and sentence this Judas priest to the Church equivalent of a lifetime of breaking rocks. Utilizing such a source, and the "revelations" from other false friends of Voris, Jones has succeeded in indelibly smearing Voris_well_beyond what he had to do to advance his viewpoint.
It's not to say that Jones doesn't have a legitimate point to make. He says that Voris' portrayal of his parents as saints is a horrible lie. He says that Voris suffers from deep psychological wounds from his childhood, which may very well be true. He claims that Voris lied when he said that he came clean because the NY Archdiocese was about to expose him; Jones claims that Voris was compelled to tell the truth because of the increasing number of ex-lovers who were exposing him on the internet. Jones posits that sexual attraction (which may or may not be acted on) is only one aspect of the homosexual psyche, which is true, and that the homosexual almost always exhibits narcissism, self-dramatization, insecurity about gender identity and other manifestations of psychological problems which would preclude a homosexual from effectively functioning in society, especially in a leadership role as an orthodox religious reformer. Jones cites experts who have noticed that reformed homosexuals often use religion as a sort of substitute method of dramatizing themselves. In addition, he accuses Voris of financial malfeasance which I didn't quite understand upon first reading. Nevertheless, Jones could have made these arguments without going into such disgusting detail which were gleaned from sources that shouldn't have betrayed Voris' confidence in the first place.
Michael Voris has been a courageous and steadfast defender of Mother Church. He has been an evangelist of the first order and, I thought, could have achieved sainthood some day. We shouldn't hold his former life against him but, as Jones pointed out, sin does stain the body, soul and mind, with homosexuality leaving some of the worst damage. I'm on the fence about whether Michael Voris should take a less exalted role in promoting the Faith. I think his past life does undermine his "apostolate" and his own position in the eyes of others. He'll forever be tarred as an ex-homosexual activist, with his mission limited by that truth. Would any parent want their sons staying with Voris at his Pause program now? Nevertheless, Jones went about this wrong way and brought dishonor and shame upon himself as much as he tried to do for Voris.
